I think my husband is seriously becoming addicted to playing poker, and I can’t stand it much longer?

Question by michelle c : I think my husband is seriously becoming addicted to playing poker, and I can’t stand it much longer? I moved to the US a few months ago, to marry my husband. I knew he liked to play poker, but I feel like its spiriling out of control. He is a very good poker player – he rarely looses, and frequently wins $ 500+, so his ego is becoming over-inflated.

The past week, he has been playing online everyday. On Thursday he was playing from 10-3am, the next day he played online a little bit, and then we went out for dinner…with poker friends. Saturday was poker all day online – I had a minor car accident, and he seemed more interested in playing poker. Then today, he’s playing poker again, and will be playing a tournament tonight. Meals are even eaten infront of the PC!! He claims “theres nothing better to do right now” so he may as well play – how can I argue that??

Once a fortnight he goes out & plays till 9am! It just hurts me, because it was only on Wednesday we had a huge argument about how I thought his playing was becoming obsessive, so he said he would play less, pls help. Best answer:

Any addiction will kill a marriage.
If he won’t go to counseling, then you go. You might also want to start putting some cash away before you NEED to escape.

Gamblers usually brag about their winnings but never tell of their losses. It might be that the $ 500 he wins is at a $ 1,000 loss.

If he doesn’t stop his addiction, you will find your credit ruined soon. Nobody rides a winning streak forever. Online gambling is set specifically for people to lose. I guarantee you he hasn’t told you the entire story.

I’d say get pregnant by him and leave him, but apparently he has some undocumented income from his poker playing so you wouldn’t be able to get much child support… If you have to stay married to him for visa or money, then go cheating while he plays.

its good that he wins money but playing poker online for that long might not be so good for his health. try getting him interested in something else like.. golf, fishing, sports, etc. You should talk to him about stuff and make him get interested in talking and doing other stuff. say stuff like “pick me or that poker thing”

You should start playing… and see how he feels…
You might actually start to understand the addication to it..

But that is messed up about the car accident..

Is this his only source of income? If so, then think of it as his job. You wouldn’t get mad at him for going to work, right? If it’s purely for fun and maybe a little money then there is a problem. Gambling can destroy a relationship… believe me, i know.
